About this tree

This particular tree is a Herefordshire Champion Tree. A native to the high mountains of the southern Andes of Chile and Argentina, arriving in the UK during the 1830s. This beech is an unusual tree in that it is an evergreen broadleaf. the Antarctic Beech has some unique features. The heart-shaped foliage has a bright, glossy look, with the dark bark covered in thin white lines known as 'lenticels'. Nothofagus Antarctica is a deciduous tree, so the glossy green leaves turn to yellow heading into Autumn.

An alternative use of Nothofagus Antarctica is as a decorative topiary shrub, achieved through annual pruning in late spring or early summer.
