About
About this tree

A small ascending ornamental cherry with a columnar crown. Height 6 - 8 m, but broader than P. serrulata 'Amanogawa'. Has a grey-brown smooth bark. The dark green oval leaves have a sharply toothed edge. They are approx. 7 cm in size and have a pretty orange to reddish-purple autumnal colour. Flowers abundantly in April, producing white single flowers that grow in twos and threes together. Flower diameter approx. 2.5 cm. The flowers emerge simultaneously with the light green leaves. 'Umineko' came from a cross between P. incisa and P serrulata var. speciosa. This cross also produced P. Snow Goose. Because of its abundant flowers and remarkable crown 'Umineko' is a very useful tree. Recorded in 2018 as a UK Champion Tree
