Robust and fast growing tree with a broad, pyramidal, remarkably symmetrical crown. The trunk is grey and smooth and the young twigs are glossy reddish-brown and bear white hairs. Later they become bare. The broad ovoid to almost round and sturdy leathery leaves are glossy dark green. On the underside they are felt-like and yellowish-grey. The young emerging leaves also bear white felt-like hairs. The shallow-lobed leaf edge is serrated. In late May the umbels of creamy white flowers appear. In the late summer the (brownish-) red to orange-yellow berries emerge. S. latifolia bears an exceptionally abundant amount of fruit. The tree is very useful in industrial areas and stands up well to hard surfaces.a species of Whitebeam that was originally derived from the Fountainbleau area in France, south of Paris. This tree is thought to be a hybrid of Sorbus torminalis (Wild Service Tree) and Sorbus intermedia (Swedish Whitebeam).
The literal Latin translation of latifolia is broad-leaved, which describes this tree well.
